Art & Innovation

Art and innovation have featured consistently in the evolution of Art Science Node (ASN), in addition to research and innovation. Art Science Node (ASN) is committed to the sustainability of synergy between Art, Science and Technology. For example, this is achieved through the opportunities for the powerful exchange of ideas between theorists and practitioners in the fields of art, science and technology who have collaborated on projects.

This is reflected in Art Science Node’s members and partners, from organizations and institutions such as The Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry, Polish Academy of Sciences, International Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology Warsaw, Adam Mickiewicz University UAM Faculty of Biology Poznan, University of Arts Poznan, Laznia Center for Contemporary Art Gdansk, WRO Centre for Media Art, (Poland), Artists-in-Labs program (Switzerland), Unconventional Computing Centre of Bristol University (UK), The Arts Catalyst (UK), Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute (Germany), Biofaction (Austria), SymbioticA (Australia), Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics Aarhus University (Denmark) and others.

European projects

Currently, Art Science Node (ASN) is involved in two European projects in the frame of Horizon 2020:

CHIC & EpiMimesis

CHIC

Art Science Node (ASN) is a partner of the CHIC Consortium, an EU Research and Innovation program, which embraces 11 institutions and organizations from Europe, Serbia, and New Zealand. Under the Horizon 2020 program NMBP, BIOTEC (Art, Research & Innovation).

During this 5 years mega project ASN is responsible for an innovative communication strategy using art and science to share a wide range of research on the chicory plant with the public through art & science. ASN has initiated an art and science program, which includes two artistic residencies at scientific research institutes.

EpiMimesis, Epizone V, shifting identities

Also receiving EU recognition is the Art Science Node project EpiMimesis, Epizone V: Shifting Identities which has been granted Vertigo Starts Residency status. STARTS (Science, Technology & the Arts) support collaborations between artists, scientists, engineers and researchers to develop more creative, inclusive, and sustainable technologies.

EpiMimesis, Epizone V, reflecting on our shifting of identities powered by merging digi-tech and biotech revolution, is being developed by Joanna Hoffmann with EpiLab Team in collaboration with 3IT Fraunhofer HHI in Berlin and supported by four scientific and cultural institutions/organisations.

Activities

Art Science Node (ASN) members have represented ASN at particular conferences over the years for example at the FEBS Congress (2019), VII Saint Petersburg International Cultural Forum (2018) and the World Computer Congress (2018), European Congress of Biotechnology (2016) among others.

Capture the Future(s) is both a motto of ASN and a thread of events that have taken place since 2015. Capture the Future(s) focus is on various aspects of evolution, that influence not only biological sciences but the changing perception of ourselves and our relationship to the natural, social and technological environments.

ASN has partnered with the German Patent & Trademark Office, the STATE Festival, Transmediale Digital Culture Festival and also participated actively in the Long Night of Sciences in Berlin over the years.

Public engagement and education are one of the most important challenges for the art & science community.

Rhizosphere: the Big Net Work of Small Worlds

ASN is proud to support Rhizosphere: the Big Net Work of Small Worlds , an innovative and comprehensive program in the field of art-science- education, based on inter-university cooperation between the Studio for Transdisciplinary Projects and Research, Faculty of Artistic Education and Curatorial Studies of the University of Arts (UAP) and the Faculty of Biology of the Adam Mickiewicz University (UAM)Poznań.

Erasmus+

ASN is also delighted to support the Erasmus+ Programme. Established in 1987 Erasmus+ been offering university students the possibility of studying or doing an internship abroad.

Eurobiotech 2019

ASN will participate in the upcoming Eurobiotech conference to be held in Krakow, Poland from 23-25 September 2019. Eurobiotech has become a permanent part of the Krakow’s scientific events calendar. The previous Eurobiotech Congress in Krakow gathered 450 participants from 22 countries. Joanna Hoffmann together with members of the EpiLab team Piotr Słomczewski, Andre Bartetzki in collaboration with  Prof. Janusz Bujnicki’s Lab presents an artistic interactive work “A Breath for Leonardo”

A Breath for Leonardo

A Breath for Leonardo is designed to pay homage to this great genius at the threshold of the digital age of New Renaissance.

This interactive installation, in which the original, static two-dimensional diagram of Leonardo’s famous drawing of Vetruvian Man is transformed. Into a dynamic multidimensional geometry of the fundamental molecule of life, the RNA molecule. Involves using your breath to transform molecular states and move through various paths of the poetic labyrinth of shifting identities.

7th edition of the Central European Congress of Life Sciences Eurobiotech

Agrobiotechnology and Personalised Medicine will be the leading motives of the 7th Eurobiotech, the European Congress of Life Sciences. Many of the critical issues of modern agriculture and medicine relate to biotechnologies.

The 7th Eurobiotech 2019 Congress is part of the  European Biotech Week Innovation is in our genes.

EpiMimesis – EpizoneV: Shifting Identities

XIIth Florence Biennale 18–27 October 2019, Fortezza da Basso, Florence – Italy

Joanna Hoffman and the EpiLab team have been invited to participate in the XIIth Florence Biennale with the artistic project: EpiMimesis – EpiZone V: Shifting Identities designed for the Florence Biennale 2019 which comprises of two main parts:

An inter-active immersive VR environment: “W?W?W? Leonardo”, Where, What, Who (is) Leonardo?

&

An interactive 3D hologram-like display (Pepper’s ghost): “A Breath for Leonardo”.

The artistic project is presented as an immersive, multi-sensual experience, inviting the viewer to enter an interactive, poetic audio-visual Zone, combining image, sound, poetry, and touch, bridging scientific data with artistic visions. The audience will be engaged in virtual reality creation and moving through the imaginary labyrinth of elusive identities. Read more?

World Bio Markets Congress, 2-4 November, 2020, Amsterdam, the Netherlands

World Bio Markets is an annual congress of key-players in the field of bio-economy. It is the largest meeting of delegates from research institutions, companies, start-ups, universities, organizations, industries in Europe. The World Bio Markets 2020 will take place at the Passenger Terminal, Amsterdam, from 2-4 November 2020.
Organized by ASN partner – Bio Market Insights – World Bio Markets 2020’s goal is to connect the bio-industry value chain, from lab to market, and driving change through commercially viable and sustainable innovation.

ASN will bring together the world of art and the world of innovation: universities, research institutes, and industries to this global event, providing an extraordinary perspective to the bio-economy key-players and stakeholders through the means of art exhibition: Organized byArt & Science Node with partners, the exhibition bridges two interdisciplinary ASSET projects: CHIC & Rhizosphere, providing survey of artworks created by international artists in collaboration with scientists in the field of life sciences and biotechnology.
